Legehuset vaccinates Västra Götaland's residents against Covid-19

No, vaccination against covid-19 is free of charge for anyone who wants to be vaccinated.

It is not possible to choose a vaccine. Which Covid-19 vaccine you are provided is determined by the region.

Suppose a woman has a disease or condition that may increase the risk of serious illness. In that case, vaccination is recommended even if she is pregnant. It concerns

  • Chronic cardiovascular disease, including stroke and high blood pressure.
  • Chronic lung diseases such as COPD and severe and unstable asthma.
  • Other conditions that lead to impaired lung function or impaired ability to cough.
  • Chronic liver or kidney failure.
  • Type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Diseases that affect the immune system due to illness or treatment.

Pregnancy in women over 35 or with a BMI over 30 is always considered a high-risk pregnancy.

Therefore, they should also be offered vaccination against covid-19. There is no reason to give a vaccine during the first trimester of pregnancy. Thus, vaccination is recommended after the 12th week of pregnancy. Logistics and routines for prescribing vaccinations take place according to regional guidelines.

At present, the Swedish Public Health Agency is awaiting a general recommendation for vaccination for all pregnant women but is following the development of knowledge.

The vaccination creates protection against serious illness. After vaccination, the body's immune system builds up protection against covid-19. But it is not certain that everyone who is vaccinated will receive comprehensive protection. This applies to all vaccines, not just those against covid-19. You still run a lower risk of becoming seriously ill. Studies are ongoing to determine how long the protection after the covid-19 vaccine lasts and whether we will need refill doses.

Additional doses are needed to provide reasonable protection against covid-19. Depending on which vaccine is used, it takes different lengths of time. See the list of questions below.

  • Pfizer/BioNTechs vaccin – 6 veckor
  • Modernas vaccin – 6 veckor
  • AstraZenecas vaccin Vaxzevria – 9 veckor
  • Covid-19 Vaccine Janssen – endast 1 dos behövs

The covid-19 vaccination protects you from becoming seriously ill. However, the effect of vaccination on the spread of infection has not been studied to a sufficient extent for us to know how much vaccination contributes to stopping the infection. With current knowledge, we must use all available measures at the same time.

In order to slow down the spread of infection, we therefore need, during the vaccinations, to continue to follow the general advice: stay at home in case of symptoms, keep your distance from each other and wash your hands often.

It is common to experience side effects after vaccination against covid-19. Examples of side effects are fatigue, fever, chills, muscle and joint pain and headaches. These reactions are a natural reaction of the body's immune system, and you can take the second dose. You can read more about side effects here.

In specific cases, a doctor should decide whether you should take the second dose of the vaccine. That is if you:

  • needed medical attention after receiving the first dose of covid-19 vaccine
  • have previously had covid-19 and after receiving the first dose of vaccine against covid-19 had severe side effects in the form of high fever and malaise for more than a day.

In these cases, contact your healthcare or health centre before receiving dose two. It is also vital that you or your healthcare provider report the suspected side effects. You can find information on how to do it at The Medical Products Agency's website.

At present, we recommend that people who have had covid-19 be vaccinated with two doses, even if they may already have some protection after the disease. Two doses give you an enhanced and extended protection against covid-19.

After being vaccinated with both doses, T cells are created in the body. The immune response usually takes about 3-4 weeks. You can already obtain a small number of T cells 2-3 weeks after the first dose, but not enough to read from a venous T cell test. Read more about T-cells here
