TETANUS

Tetanus

Tetanus is a disease that causes uncontrolled muscle spasms. It can have severe consequences, such as breathing difficulties and, in the worst case, death. Because vaccination against tetanus has been in the Swedish general vaccination program for a long time, the disease is sporadic in Sweden. However, it may return because the disease remains around the world. The bacterium that causes tetanus is found in soil and dirt and is usually infected by soil coming into contact with a wound on the body. Infection can also occur via animal bites. Therefore, it is necessary to constantly clean wounds properly and seek medical attention as soon as possible if an infection is suspected.

When is tetanus vaccination needed?

Most Swedes are vaccinated against tetanus because vaccination has been part of the Swedish general vaccination program for a long time. However, it is essential to remember that a tetanus vaccination is not lifelong. Depending on how many times an individual has received the vaccine, it may be helpful to take a booster dose after 10 to 20 years. Even if the protection from vaccination would have expired, it is unusual to be infected with tetanus in Sweden. However, a few cases occur each year. It is especially relevant to review your protection against tetanus when travelling abroad. Many countries do not have the same hygienic conditions as Sweden. It may be a good idea to consider taking a refill dose to reactivate or enhance pre-trip protection.

Does the tetanus vaccine have any side effects?

The tetanus vaccine causes mild side effects such as swelling, redness and calm irritation around the injection site. However, these decrease after a few days. Another side effect can also be a temporary fever and goes away. Serious side effects are infrequent.
