When smallpox is transmitted, the virus does not disappear from the body but remains, developing a continuing disease. Those individuals who have previously suffered from chickenpox may suffer from shingles. It is usually the elderly who suffer from shingles, but it can also affect other age groups. The disease occurs in blisters on the body that feel very unpleasant but disappear. However, blisters can lead to chronic pain and permanent problems in more severe cases.
